A beautiful lake, a fine place

For the ultimate in camping, fishing and other recreation, one need look no farther than Illinois Valley’s Lake Selmac.

The 300-acre park operated by Josephine County features 18 full hook-up camp sites, three partial hook-up camp sites, 14 tent sites and a yurt.

Josephine County Park Supervisor Doreen Ferguson said that two more yurts are planned for next season, and will add to the park’s overall appeal.

“It’s a beautiful lake. It’s a fine place,” Ferguson said. “It’s come up a lot in the last few years.”

Recent improvements to Lake Selmac’s facilities include new restrooms and a playground. A dock to accommodate disabled visitors also has been added, much to Ferguson’s delight.

“The other day, I saw people with a wheelchair out there,” she said. “It made me so happy.”

Lake Selmac has enough amenities to make it family friendly, without sacrificing its rugged outdoors aspect.

“I like the feeling of Lake Selmac,” Ferguson said. “You can be comfortable, but still have the sense of being in the country and getting away from it all.”

There is no shortage of barbecue pits or benches at Lake Selmac, further adding to the relaxing atmosphere.

Much work has been done to maintain the park and keep its many trails accessible. Ferguson said that those efforts are mostly by volunteers, and have helped keep the park in tip-top shape.

“It’s much nicer and keeps getting better,” Ferguson said. “I’d like to see it more heavily used. It’s a nice park.”

Lake Selmac also features an 18-hole disc golf course. The sport has become increasingly popular in Southwestern Oregon, and the course at Lake Selmac is widely used among area aficionados.

Of course, there’s also the lake itself, complete with bass and trout fishing.

The park is available to host picnics, weddings and other special events. For more information, phone Josephine County Parks Dept. at (541) 474-5285.
