Meals on Wheels seeks drivers
From our weekly issue dated January 12, 2011
Cave Junction’s Meals on Wheels program needs one or two helpful volunteers to help deliver meals each Friday to seniors around the Valley.
According to Bertha Bradt, an IV Senior Center member who manages the “Meals” program, several older residents rely on meal deliveries since they may not be able to leave the house.
“This is for any senior who is homebound and needs meals,” Bradt said. “It’s a very caring job. You’re feeding people who have done things for other people when they were younger.”
Bradt said 15 seniors received a hot meal on Monday, Jan. 10 “ and that was just one day that week.
“That’s a lot of people who might not have had meals if we weren’t there,” Bradt said. One or two volunteers are needed on Fridays for a couple of hours at a time. Bradt said anyone interested in volunteering should call her at home or stop by the county building in Cave Junction on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays before noon, and she will explain the details.
Those who deliver meals do need to complete an application with a background check because they will be going inside people’s homes. Bradt said she would explain the process to anyone interested and help introduce newcomers to the rest of the team, along with providing directions and maps to the homes.
“For the days we don’t run, Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends, we send out frozen meals,” Bradt added. Meals are delivered from Grants Pass and Bradt helps prepare them at the county building three days a week.
Bradt said interested volunteers could reach her at home if she’s not in the county building at (541) 592-3187.
“It’s a worthwhile cause,” she said. “I don’t know what they would do without the meals. Fifteen deliveries [on Monday] is a lot of people, and it’s not just Cave Junction, but out to O’Brien [and nearby].”
