Cougar JV teams fall to Brookings Harbor
Follow with loss to Lakeview
From our weekly issue dated January 12, 2011
Illinois Valley High School’s junior varsity basketball didn’t bring home any wins this week, but they’re still in the hunt for a strong season finish.
On Wednesday, Jan. 5, the boys’ JV lost 36-58 against Brookings Harbor High School. But with a squad made up almost entirely of freshman, other Cougar coaches say the team is matching up well against considerably more experienced JV teams.
“Our JV team is [almost] all freshman and we play them against juniors,” said boys’ varsity coach Jeff Winters. “We play hard, but we’re overmatched.”
The Lady Cougars JV squad played Prospect Charter on Tuesday, Jan. 4. Both Illinois Valley JV squads also played Lakeview on Friday, Jan. 7, before the varsity games.
On Tuesday, Jan. 11 and Friday, Jan. 14, Illinois Valley will face Lost River followed by Bonanza. Closer in age and experience to the Cougars, these JV games could prove exciting for the crowd before varsity teams take the floor.
In previous years, junior varsity teams struggled more against older teams: “Last year, we lost [almost] every game by 40 points,” Winters said.
But this year, JV teams at Illinois Valley are putting more points on the board, proving that less experienced teams are no less able to put up a fight against, bigger, more imposing opponents. And the difficult matches could benefit the teams in the long run.
“They’re having to play against the bigger guys, but it will make them better,” Winters added. “They like to have some competition.”
