Lessons from overseas“

Every country in the world is thought to be the best by its citizens. I wonder how many of our people know that Brazil just elected its first woman president. How many of you know that China is putting its resources into green energy including a high-speed rail system“

My husband and I were fortunate to have visited Italy in 2008. We were impressed by the vast effort they put into constant restoration of their many old churches, museums, castles, colleges and other edifices of historical importance, thereby keeping many people employed. Many of these grand structures are thousands of years old. One mode of Italy“s transportation is a high-speed (90-100mph) rail system that one can take all across Europe. Their food tastes heavenly because they bake bread daily and vegetables are locally grown. Almost every family who has a plot of land has a garden or small vineyard. Education and health care is provided to every citizen. They do pay a high income tax but apparently they think some programs are a social responsibility.

It makes me ponder why with many people in our own country out of jobs, lacking health care, undereducated or homeless, we feel the need to pour massive amounts of money into election campaigns. In England, television political ads are prohibited.

Maybe this great experiment in democracy fueled by capitalism can learn a thing or two from older, more socially evolved countries.
