Cougar harriers start season
From our weekly issue dated September 08, 2010
The Illinois Valley High School (IVHS) cross country team got its first look at the competition in its Thursday, Sept. 2 season opener at New Hope Christian School near Grants Pass.
Also represented at the meet were teams from New Hope, Cascade Christian, Rogue River, Hidden Valley, North Valley, St. Mary’s and Grants Pass high schools.
IVHS entered eight runners in the boys’ 3,000 meter race. Of all 63 participants, Cougar senior Tyler Delaney fared best, coming in 24th with a time of 11:47. Right on his heels in 25th place at 11:48 was IVHS senior Celilo Nordahl.
Senior Alex Hess placed 35th with a time of 12:21 and senior Mark Delgado placed 50th at 13:44.
Although the North Valley boys took first place at the meet, Cougar coach Bill Yeoman said he was proud of his team’s effort.
“It was a good competition,” Yeoman said, adding that the I.V. squad fared well against teams from similarly sized schools.
Grants Pass came in second, with St. Mary’s taking third place.
The girls’ race had approximately 42 entrants, two from Illinois Valley.
Lady Cougar freshman Samantha Milner placed 19th with a time of 14:29. Junior Erin Byrne was 32nd at 16:46.
The Hidden Valley girls took first place, with second going to Grants Pass and Cascade Christian in third.
Next up for the Cougar harriers is the Crusader Cross Country Invitational at Bear Creek Park in Medford on Thursday, Sept. 9.
