A series of interagency police operations has lead to the seizure of more than 43,000 marijuana plants in the Illinois Valley in recent weeks.
In the most recent action on Saturday, Aug. 28, agents with Josephine and Jackson county sheriff“s offices and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency raided a large grow just west of Selma, said Sue Watkins with Josephine County Sheriff“s Office.
Law enforcement agencies from seven counties have combined their efforts to create the Southern Oregon Multi-Agency Marijuana Eradication and Reclamation (SOMMER), aimed at combating illegal marijuana grows. Participating counties are Jackson, Douglas, Coos, Curry, Josephine, Lake and Klamath.
According to Jackson County Sheriff“s Office public information officer Andrea Carlson, law enforcement officials have been working towards the raids since July. She said that the majority of the marijuana discovered was the work of Mexican drug cartels.
