The 39th annual Illinois Valley Lions Club Labor Day Festival is set for Saturday, Sept. 4 through Monday, Sept. 6, with a series of attractions planned for people of all ages.
Longtime valley resident Gary Thornhill was selected to serve as the grand marshal of this year“s parade, themed “The Illinois Valley“Through the Eyes of a Child,“ which is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Monday. Parade participants will line up their floats at and around Evergreen Elementary School on W. River Street in Cave Junction, and the procession will make its way down Redwood Hwy., concluding near the front of the Junction Inn.
Another big draw is the Tuff Truck race, now in its fourth year. Those races are set for Saturday and Sunday, starting at noon and will be held on a lot adjacent to Jubilee Park developed for the races.
All vehicles must pass a technical inspection prior to their entrance into the race. A roll bar, seatbelt, neck brace and helmet are required, and wheels must be secured by all required lug nuts. The cars“ batteries must be covered by a non-conducive material and be securely mounted to the vehicle. Any airbags must be removed, and tow hooks are recommended.
Drivers under 18 years of age must obtain written consent from their parents.
There are admission fees for contestants and spectators. Cash and prizes will be awarded to the top five race contestants.
This is the 14th year that the Lions Club will raffle a motorcycle. This year“s prize is a 2010 Harley Davidson Dyna Wide Glide cycle, valued at $16,000. The cycle has been on display at Taylor“s Country Store for months, and tickets still are available.
Other events include a talent show, watermelon seed spitting contest, greased pole climb, breakfast by the Masonic Lodge, bingo, food booths and a fire safety house.
Proceeds raised from the festival help the Lions Club to fund scholarships for Illinois Valley High School graduates, hospital equipment, and eyeglasses and hearing aids for underprivileged children.
