Unemployment in Josephine County rose slightly last month, according to a Tuesday, Aug. 24 press release from the Oregon Employment Dept. (OED).

The county“s seasonally adjusted rate went from 13.8 percent in June to 14.3 percent in July, OED said. It was at 14.6 percent in July 2009.

Neighboring Jackson County“s rate was 12.8 percent, up from 12 percent in June. That figure stood at 12.8 percent last July, OED said.

Oregon“s unemployment rate was at 10.6 percent, up slightly from 10.5 percent in June. Last July, the state“s rate was 11.4 percent. National unemployment remained unchanged from June at 9.5 percent, up slightly from last July“s rate of 9.4 percent.

Josephine County“s payroll employment dropped by 620 jobs in July due to summer reductions in local government education. The leisure and hospitality sector gained 110 jobs because of the tourism season. Construction, manufacturing and wholesale trade all added 20 jobs, and health care and social assistance added 10.

However, transportation, warehousing and utilities lost 40 jobs due to seasonal declines in transportation. Educational and health services lost 30, education services lost 40. Government employment declined by a net of 720 jobs, with most of those losses in local government education.

Throughout the past 12 months, total payroll employment in Josephine County fell by 350 jobs. In that time, construction lost 70 jobs, manufacturing lost 100, retail trade lost 120, leisure and hospitality lost 60, financial activities lost 20, professional and business services and local education both lost 30.

The wood product manufacturing sector gained 20 jobs in the last year. Nursing and residential care facilities and federal and local government each gained 30.
