Students who share a joke or song or other talent will be rewarded with supplies for school, courtesy of an area “ditch digger“ who appreciates education.
For the sixth consecutive year, David Anderson Excavating will sponsor a booth at the Illinois Valley Lions Club“s Labor Day Festival, Sept. 4, 5 and 6 in Cave Junction“s Jubilee Park.
The booth has grown from one table with some crayons, pencils and filler paper affair, to a full-sized booth providing every item that is required on the Three Rivers supply list for the Illinois Valley schools to help parents with supplies for students.
Students need only share their talents and just have fun in order to take home free school supplies. Each student can participate every day of the festival.
“People are still struggling just to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads,“ Anderson said. “This is one way to help our community move forward with our kids.“
“Along with other businesses, the local excavators have once again experienced a difficult year, but we keep on digging,“ Anderson said. “It is when times are tough that you dig deeper and try harder“
“This is a lesson that students of today should heed as it appears they are inheriting an even rougher economy.“ he says.
Anderson has been an Illinois Valley resident since the age of eleven. He attended the Kerby School, Evergreen Elementary and Illinois Valley High School. Although Anderson is a high school dropout, he has dug his way to a successful life, learning the hard way.
“I just keep on digging,“ he says.
“My momma used to say you better stay in school or you will be nothing but a ditch digger and she was right.“
Although he“s proud of being a “ditch digger,“ Anderson can“t help but think how much easier owning a business would have been had he stayed in school.
“I want the kids to learn from my experience,“ said Anderson
“David has been part of the I.V. Lions Club Labor Day Festival for several years,“ said club President Mark Camp.
Camp noted that the David Anderson Excavating school supply booth has been one of the most popular booths among the kids.
“Although sight and hearing are the primary focus of the Lions Club“s service, we encourage and support all positive efforts that help our kids. After all, they are our future.“
