Hypnotherapst Jody Conrad

Wrapped up in the daily grind, it“s easy for most people to forget that their subconscious minds ultimately control much of their thinking.

Jody Conrad, a certified hypnotherapist, is very aware of that fact, and is ready to help people deal with the problems that start in the subconscious and spread from there.

Earlier this summer, Conrad opened New Directions Hypnotherapy at 140 B S. Redwood Hwy., above Ravenswood Gallery in Downtown Cave Junction.

Conrad has lived in the community for around seven years. She has worked as a school psychologist during the last 20 years, and still works part-time for the Southern Oregon Educational Service District in the Rogue River area.

While working in schools, Conrad said she would see the difficulty that students had in changing their behaviors, even if they were motivated to do so. She began to study conscious versus unconscious motivation, and earned her hypnotherapy certification in March.

“It seemed like this natural progression,“ Conrad said.

In recent weeks, Conrad has set up her practice at its location and is building a client base. She now can help clients with a number of issues, including quitting smoking, weight loss, building confidence and combating stress and anxiety.

Some 12 percent of the mind consists of the “conscious,“ Conrad said. That part of the mind, she explained, focuses on thinking, reasoning, logic and willpower.

But the other 88 percent is the unconscious mind, which contains various associations and memories that can easily creep into the conscious mind.

“It“s really about past programs and past patterns in the subconscious,“ she said.

The subconscious mind is resistant to change and does not like unknowns, Conrad said. Hypnosis “opens a little gateway“ between the conscious and unconscious minds by removing the filter between the two and allowing the unconscious mind to accept changes, she added.

Although there are a “lot of misconceptions“ about hypnotherapy, Conrad said it is drastically different than staged “hypnosis“ and has many benefits.

“Sometimes in the session, you can really do wonders,“ Conrad said. “You are always awake. You are always aware. You are always in control.“

There is a fee for services, but New Directions does offer a sliding scale for its clients.
