Deputies lauded by CJ watch group

From our weekly issue dated August 25, 2010

A Neighborhood Watch group in Cave Junction has expressed its appreciation for the efforts of the Josephine County Sheriff“s Office (JCSO) to keep the streets safe.

In an Aug. 11 letter addressed to Sheriff Gil Gilbertson and signed by Henrietta Smith, members of the Sherwood Avenue Neighborhood Watch praised Special Deputy Hal Smith.

That group has been in existence for almost two years, and credits Smith for helping to make it happen.

“He spends many hours at our meetings giving us advice and guidance and answering questions,“ the letter said.

Smith also was praised as being “very knowledgeable,“ accessible and for coming prepared to neighborhood meetings. He was characterized as an “all around nice guy who is dedicated to the success of the Neighborhood Watch program.“

“He is a credit to the community and to your department,“ the letter said.

The letter was accompanied by a certificate of appreciation for Smith signed by members of the Sherwood Avenue Neighborhood Watch.

Gilbertson said that Smith has been with JCSO for more than 15 years and is in charge of the Neighborhood Watch program. That program, Gilbertson said, is an “essential piece of community policing.“

Smith“s “leadership, passion and dedication has helped this community organize approximately 30 neighborhood watch programs and it continues to grow,“ Gilbertson said. “It“s volunteers such as Special Deputy Smith that makes my job easier and I“m proud to work with.“

JCSO Deputy George Gasperson and Detective Ray Webb also were honored by the group for removing a methamphetamine operation within that neighborhood, Gilbertson said.
