RCC board approves contract for Belt Building improvements

From our weekly issue dated August 18, 2010

A contract for $135,000 in additional improvements to the RCC Kerby Belt Bldg. unanimously was approved by the Rogue Community College Board of Education during its Thursday, Aug. 5 meeting.

The project, for renovation and deferred maintenance at the facility, includes improvements for the kitchen and dining hall.

Grants Pass-based Cummings Construction Inc. came in with the low bid. That company already has done work on the Kerby building and RCC“s Redwood Campus in Grants Pass. Prevailing wages will be paid to persons working on the project.

The resolution passed by the RCC board includes an amendment allowing for $25,000 in contingency funds for change orders.

Kenny Houck, business development coordinator for the Illinois Valley Business Entrepreneurial Center at the Belt Bldg., said that the project will focus on improving energy efficiency.

Currently, Houck said, the building has its original single-pane windows from decades ago. The old, fluorescent lighting also will be replaced with more contemporary fixtures, he said, and new floor coverings will be added. All those improvements ultimately will lead to reduced operations costs and utility bills at the Belt Bldg., Houck said.
