George H. Gillyatt

George Herbert Gillyatt, 86, of O“Brien died July 5, 2010, at Royale Gardens Health and Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass.

A memorial service was held Sunday, July 18 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Cave Junction. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at since1928hull.com.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of the donor“s choice.

Gillyatt was born March 23, 1924, in Long Beach, Calif. When he was 8 years old, his family moved to Arcata, Calif. Due to the approach of World War II and his father“s service in the U.S. Navy, his family returned to Long Beach, where he attended middle school and high school. During high school, he was active in Reserve Officers“ Training Corps. In 1941, he enlisted in the Navy and served as an aviation electrician“s mate on the second USS Yorktown aircraft carrier in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged.

In August 1950, in Long Beach, he married Mary Virginia “Mollie“ Lundberg, who survives. He worked for the Los Angeles County Mechanical Dept. as a journeyman electrician, and he was an active member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. While working for Los Angeles County, his family lived in Gardena, Calif., and Torrance, Calif. During these years, he was involved in church activities, participated in a bowling league, was a member of the Masonic Order and a Cub Master for Boy Scouts. He was honored by the Red Cross as a member of its “Three Gallon Club“ for blood donations.

At age 52, he retired from Los Angeles County. In 1975, he purchased property in O“Brien, where he lived for 11 years after his retirement. During that period, he worked at Snappy Electric and drove a school bus in the Illinois Valley. He also was active in his church, square dancing, being an Amway distributor and maintaining his property.

In 1988, he and his wife moved to Orangevale, Calif., where he worked part-time at an Ace Hardware store for 15 years. They returned to O“Brien in October 2004 to be near their children and grandchildren.

He enjoyed woodworking, camping with his family, working in the woods in O“Brien, watching wildlife and reading.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Joann, Steven and Ruth Gillyatt, all of O“Brien; and two grandchildren.

His parents, Frances Margaret Williver and George Herbert Gillyatt Sr. preceded him in death.
