STOCKINGS FOR SOLDIERS - Members of Josephine County 4-H clubs have completed 300 stockings of the 600 that they need for their project to provide U.S. servicemen with socks. During county fair week, Aug. 17 through 21, 4-H“ers will work on finishing the last 300. The 4-H Bldg. on the fairgrounds in Grants Pass won“t only have its exhibits, but also sewing machines set up for the 4-H members to sew between activities. “We would like the public to come see the display and participating 4-H“ers in this community service project,“ said Lorena Becker, of Oregon State University Josephine County Extension. “Monetary donations are welcome,“ she noted.

“LET“S GET PHYSICALS“ - Siskiyou Community Health Center will offer sports physical exams at the School-Based Health Centers beginning Wednesday, Aug. 18. TREES, WEEDS & MORE - Oregon State University Extension Service is offering a one-day minicollege for family forestland owners, foresters, loggers, arborists, teachers, and the general public. Titled, “Trees, Forests, Weeds, Water, Wildlife & More,“ there will be 26 classes from which to choose for a small fee. The event is set for Sept. 11 at Rogue Community College in Grants Pass. Registration brochures are available from OSU Extension at 215 Ringuette St. in Grants Pass; phone 541-476-6613. The registration deadline is Aug. 27: no walk-in registrations will be available. The minicollege is co-sponsored by OSU Extension, Jackson-Josephine Small Woodlands Association, RCC, and Oregon Forest Resources Institute.

BIG PEOPLE BALL - Illinois Valley Little League will hold its first “adult, co-ed, no home run limit, double elimination, unlimited arc, Blackberry Softball Tournament.“ It“s set for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14 and 15, in Cave Junction“s Jubilee Park. “IMPORTANT ISSUES“ EVENT - Josephine County Commissioner Sandi Cassanelli has issued an invitation for the public to attend a gathering “for the common good“ on Friday, Aug. 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Anne G. Basker Auditorium, adjacent to the county courthouse in Grants Pass. The meeting is “to bring awareness of important issues“ such as the Western Oregon Task Force Final Report to the Secretary of the Interior, July 22; and the proposed Siskiyou Crest National Monument, etc. The Final Report to the Secretary of the Interior can be viewed at http://www.blm.gov/or/news/files/WOTF Final Report.pdf. And the Siskiyou Crest National Monument Proposal can be viewed at http://kswild.org/ksregion/. QUACK FLAP - Public entries for Grants Pass Rotary Club“s 2010 Rogue Duck Derby are available. Proceeds are earmarked for a three-year commitment to Illinois Valley Booster Club to help develop an all-weather track at IVHS. Duck Derby entries are available for purchase in Cave Junction at the Illinois Valley News office, South Valley Bank & Trust, and Bi-Rite Auto Parts. The race will be held Sept. 25.

FESTIVAL FACTS - The Illinois Valley Lions Club 39th annual Labor Day Festival again will host an all-comers amateur talent show. There will be cash prizes for the winners of each age group. Sign up by Aug. 31. For more information, phone “Donna,“ 541-596-2719, or “Sue,“ 541-592-2252.

SCRAMBLE FOR YOUTH - Oct. 9 is set for the third annual GolfToberFest with snacks, lunch, beverages and prizes to benefit the Illinois Valley Section of the Boys & Girls Club, and there is an Oct. 1 registration deadline.
