Grant requests approved by county board
From our weekly issue dated August 11, 2010
The Josephine County Board of Commissioners voted to approve two out of three economic development grant requests presented during its Tuesday, Aug. 3 administrative meeting at the courthouse in Grants Pass.
A request for $50,000 was made by Michael Cope. He wants to establish an office to locate valuable and strategic minerals in the area and on county-owned property, said board Chairman Dwight Ellis.
For Cope, the board voted 3-0 for a $24,000 grant to fund three pieces of equipment, and a 10-year, zero-interest $10,000 loan.
Also approved 3-0 by the board was a request from Jeffrey & Julie Thomas from Concierge Home Watch, a Grants Pass company.
Ellis said that the firm sought $50,000 to expand its services. The company currently provides security checks for persons on vacation, and hopes to add businesses to its clientele.
The couple was asking for funding to further bolster its payroll, Ellis said, but the commissioners opted against doing so. Instead, they OK“d $25,000 total. Of that, $7,000 will go toward purchasing equipment; $15,000 will fund vehicle costs such as insurance; and $3,000 will be earmarked for advertising.
By expanding its services, the company hopes to hire nine full-time and 15 part-time employees, according to Ellis.
A $25,000 request from Century 21 Harris & Taylor was tabled by the board. That money, if approved, would have gone toward the purchase of a trailer to be displayed in California to advertise the real estate firm.
