WILDFIRE REMINDERS - Illinois Valley Fire District and Oregon Dept. of Forestry (ODF) remind residents that with hotter summer temperatures, the danger of catastrophic wildfire increases. For up-to-date fire season information on ODF-protected land, visit swofire.oregon.gov, or phone ODF in Grants Pass at 541-474-3152. To report a fire, phone 911 immediately.

STUDENT SUPPLIES - SOFCU Community Credit Union will begin collecting donations of new school supplies as part of its annual Back-to-School Promotion & Supply Drive though Sept. 11. Needed items: binders, pencils, book bags, crayons, wide-ruled spiral notebooks, folders, rulers, and facial tissues. A donation bin will be located at SOFCU“s Downtown Cave Junction office, 103 S. Redwood Hwy., and supplies will be donated to area schools.

MUSICAL FINALE - Beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5 at Jubilee Park in Cave Junction, the Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce free “Concerts in the Park“ series will conclude with a performance by Now and Then. A refreshment stand will be operated by Illinois Valley Little League during the concert. And the chamber will conduct a 50/50 drawing. See the ad on Page 5.

BIG PEOPLE BALL - Illinois Valley Little League will hold its first “adult, co-ed, no home run limit, double elimination, unlimited arc, Blackberry Softball Tournament.“ It“s set for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14 and 15, in Cave Junction“s Jubilee Park. QUACK FLAP - Public entries for Grants Pass Rotary Club“s 2010 Rogue Duck Derby are available. Proceeds are earmarked for a baseball complex project near Allendale Elementary School in Grants Pass, and a three-year commitment has been made to Illinois Valley Booster Club to help develop an all-weather track at Illinois Valley High School. Duck Derby entries are available for purchase in Cave Junction at the Illinois Valley News office, South Valley Bank & Trust (formerly Home Valley Bank), and Bi-Rite Auto Parts. The race will be held Sept. 25.

FESTIVAL FACTS - The Illinois Valley Lions Club 39th annual Labor Day Festival again will host an all-comers amateur talent show. There will be cash prizes for the winners of each age group. Sign up by Aug. 31. For more information, phone “Donna,“ 541-596-2719, or “Sue,“ 541-592-2252.

Also, entry forms for the Monday, Sept. 6 Labor Day Parade, and vendor sign-ups for the Sept. 4 through 6 festival are available. It costs nothing to enter the parade, said organizer Harry Johnson. “All groups and organizations are welcome,“ he said. Volunteers are sought to carry a 30-by-60-foot U.S. flag in the parade. The enrollment office will be open from Monday, Aug. 16 to Thursday, Aug. 19 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Teacher designations will begin after paperwork is completed “ “Movies in the Park“ will return to Josephine County at sunset Friday, Aug. 6 with a free showing of the animated Planet 51 at Tom Pearce Park in Grants Pass. Other shows: Friday the 13th, August Rush; Aug. 27, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The park use fee will be waived after 7 p.m. Blankets or lawn chairs are recommended.
