County unemployment down slightly for June
From our weekly issue dated July 28, 2010
Josephine County“s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped slightly from May to June, yet remains well above the state and national averages.
According to the Oregon Employment Dept. (OED), the county“s unemployment rate went from 14.4 to 13.9 percent. Neighboring Jackson County went from 12.2 to 12.1 percent, and Oregon“s rate remained static: 10.6 to 10.5 percent between May and June.
The national rate went from 9.7 to 9.5 percent.
Seasonal gains in leisure and hospitality caused the county“s total payroll to rise by 70 jobs in June, OED said. The construction sector added 30 jobs, and retail and wholesale trade added 20. However, the information sector lost 20 jobs, and government employment had a net decline of 60 jobs.
Most of that decline was related to temporary U.S. Census jobs coming to a close, OED said. That resulted in the loss of 70 federal jobs in June, accompanied by the loss of 20 positions in local government education.
State government gained 20 jobs in the county during June, OED said.
Overall, the county lost 610 payroll jobs during the past 12 months. The manufacturing sector lost 110 jobs in that time, and so did the retail trade sector. Construction employment is 60 jobs below its June 2009 total.
The financial activities sector is down 30 jobs from last year; professional and business services lost 70 jobs.
Education and health services had a net decline of 20 jobs during the past fiscal year, OED said, despite a gain of 40 in nursing and residential-care facilities.
