“River Rush“ event showcases possibilities at Illinois Valley“s Rusk Ranch Nature Center
From our weekly issue dated July 07, 2010
A serval wild cat and “Tree Creatures“ were featured Saturday, July 3 at the River Rush, a benefit for the Josephine County Food Bank and the Butterfly Pavilion of the Rusk Ranch Nature Center in Cave Junction.
Fifty acres were donated by the Rusk Family to benefit the community so that families could enjoy outdoor life, and have safe access to Illinois River.
So far the Rusk Ranch Nature Center has received grants from Four Way, Carpenter and Mountaineers foundations. An AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer will arrive in August to assist with developing the current Nature trail to the river.
The butterfly pavilion and gift shop could be open as soon as spring 2011. Long-range plans include an interactive Nature center with hands-on activities.
Maeve Callahan and Balam McNalley from the Alchemystical Workshop Theater from Portland gave a whimsical portrayal of the “Birth of the Forest.“
Suzanne Hamilton tap dancers and Joyful Noise, led by Catherine Wilson, entertained visitors at the River Rush. Other entertainers scheduled were Paul Hendershott and Kami Clarke.
While adults listened to Oregon Little Big Band and Timeless Choral Group, children frolicked with Hula Hoops, and tossed beanbags and javelins (actually foam swim noodles).
Christine Perala-Gardiner, from Suri Futures in Cave Junction, strolled with her gorgeous alpacas to introduce children to Nature and promote a new 4-H club.
Craig Wagner brought Lisha, a 5-year old serval, one of 38 felines living at Great Cats World Park in Cave Junction, now open daily for the summer.
Also exhibited was the Clean Forest Project Stream Table. Mike Bowman and Dezerae Firestone discussed their mission to combat illegal dumping and clean up and improve communities, forests, watersheds and wildland.
Said Linda Naydol, “The opportunities we will be able to share with the community will be golden.“
