Joanie Elaine Hardie

Selma resident Joanie Elaine Hardie, 69, died June 17, 2010 in Grants Pass.

Joan was born in Merced, Calif., and raised in Yuba City, Calif. Her father, Stanley Edward Durand, died young. Her mother, Christine Francis Oneto, and dad, Ron Leick, reside in Yuba City.

In 1977, Joan and her husband, Wally, designed and built their family home in Grass Valley, Calif. They retired to Selma in 2001.

Joan, a lover of the outdoors, was an avid gardener specializing in floral and ornate plant gardens. She was a life- long respected horse woman, artist and historian.

Joan camped and rode extensively throughout the Sierra Nevada consulting with many experts. She was a dedicated volunteer throughout her life. She worked the Tevis Cup Ride, an endurance horse race, and was a member of NATRC, competing in many rides and rodeos.

Joan was a member of Gold Country Trails with which she helped build and maintain trails and horse camps including improvements of The Pacific Crest Trail. As a Trails West and OCTA member, she helped mark all Overland Pioneer Trails from Idaho through California and Oregon.

Joan had been the president of the Selma Center, a member of Illinois Valley Garden Club, and volunteered at the I.V. Senior Center.

Joan was proceeded in death by her husband of 35 years, Wally Hardie, and a sister, Patty Rushing. She is survived by “sisters of her heart“ Ellen Lovett, of Selma; Barbara Davis, of Grass Valley; and Carol Burgin, of Gresham, Ore.; two brothers: David Durand, of Los Banos, Calif., and Lon Durand, of Houston, Texas; children Gina Oneto, of Cave Junction; Michelle Chastain, of Selma and Yuba City; Lisa Duggins, of Penn Valley, Calif. and son, Reed Lukins, of Baxter, Calif.; and grandchildren Amanda, Tachelle, Crystal, Amoreena, Bobby, Abraham, Mariah and Sierra; and great-grand children Joey, Jayden and Jersey.

Kenneth Morrison

Kenneth D. Morrison, 89, of Bellevue and Poulsbo, Wash., died Thursday, June 24. No formal service will be held. An online memorial can be seen at www.lewischapel.com

Mr. Morrison was born on May 12, 1921 in Grants Pass to Donald R. & Irene (Gerould) Morrison. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. Ken worked for United Airlines for 43 years and ended his career as a captain, flying DC-8s.

He was preceded in death by one son, Don, and brothers, Lloyd, Max and Gerry. Ken is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth (Clark) Morrison; son, Jay (Lisa); daughters, Charlotte Morrison, Andrea (Aaron) Sharp; daughter-in-law, Charlotte Lazar-Morrison; and grandchildren, Jessica, Kyle, Patrick, Ian, Chandler and Karey.

Francine DeWitz

Francine M. DeWitz, 71, of Cave Junction, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at her home.

Memorial donations can be made to The Family House, Three Rivers Community Hospital, 407 S.W. Ramsey Ave., Grants Pass OR 97527, where Fran volunteered her time and talent.

She was born Francine Mazzie on Sept. 27, 1938 in Warren, Ohio to Sam & Julia Mazzie. She grew up in Ohio, attended Ohio University and met and married Dave DeWitz, who died in 2000.

Fran enjoyed reading and cross stitch, as well as many other crafts, and playing games with family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Jim, of Cave Junction; a brother, Tony Mazzie, of Eugene, Ore.; three sisters, Rose Squiers, of Grants Pass; Gerrie Robinson, of Maryland and Sandy Sanford, of Montana.

Besides her husband, Fran was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy.
