Deputies with the Josephine County Sheriff“s Office (JCSO) have apprehended a man wanted last week for allegedly shooting at a police K-9.
According to JCSO, shortly before midnight on Wednesday, June 30, deputies took 35-year-old Kelly Lynn Mason into custody on Finch Road near Redwood Hwy. without incident.
On June 25, Mason was alleged to have fired at a K-9 officer near Riverbanks Road, between the Illinois Valley and Grants Pass.
As a result of the continuing investigation into the shooting incident, JCSO said, information was developed through tips that allowed deputies to identify Mason“s location in the Illinois Valley.
JCSO said that due to the seriousness of the crimes Mason is charged with, the agency requested the assistance of the Jackson County Sheriff“s Office SWAT unit. Surveillance was established on Mason“s campsite along Rough and Ready Creek, and deputies waited until the suspect left the area in a vehicle to initiate a traffic stop.
Mason was lodged in the Josephine County Jail on a Washington state arrest warrant for possession of stolen property; another warrant for domestic menacing, harassment and interfering with the making of a 911 call; a third warrant for parole violation for absconding, with an original charge of third-degree assault; unlawful use of a weapon; attempted assault on a police animal; felon in possession of a weapon; recklessly endangering another; menacing another; and pointing a firearm at another.
