Knowledge imparted through Skill Share
From our weekly issue dated June 30, 2010
Strolling through the Frog Farm in Takilma during the summer Skill Share event on Saturday, June 26 was like stepping into the pages of “Mother Earth News.“
Libby Goines sang as she spun and wove colorful fabrics. Children enjoyed a treasure hunt, made birdfeeders out of milk jugs and twigs, and led Suri Futures alpacas around the property.
Some folks applied earthen plaster to the gazebo building, and others learned how to make St. Johns“ Wort oil, while Steve Orr sharpened tools and bicycles were repaired. Some of the other workshops sponsored by the Spiral Living Center included “Fermenting and Brewing,“ “Herbal Health for Goats,“ “Making Cordage (rope),“ and a felting demonstration by Steven Coots.
The Spiral Living Center strives to teach sustainability and survival skills, such as flint and steel fire making. Deb Lukas led tours of the Frog Farm, a small homestead permaculture farm with geese, ducks, chickens, goats, an orchard, and vineyard. Produce from their vegetable garden, as well as fresh eggs, are available for sale. Herbs grown on the property are made into tinctures and oils used by Siskiyou Mountain Herbs for creams, lotions, and prescriptions for Dr. Margaret Philhower, Naturopath. The Frog Farm has an expansive library as well as a tool lending library available for members of the Spiral Living Center.
The Spiral Living Center will be sponsoring the Illinois Valley Farm & Garden Festival on Saturday, September 11 at Jubilee Park. For more information, contact spiral@spiralliving.org.
