FUDGE OF JULY - Independence Day will fall on Sunday this week, but banks, city, county, state and federal offices will be closed on Monday, July 5 to take a three-day weekend holiday. The Illinois Valley News office will be open Monday, and all regular deadlines will apply.
SUMMERTIME SONGSTERS - The Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce free Concerts in the Park series will continue at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 1 at Jubilee Park in Cave Junction with a performance by “Broadway Phil & the Shouters.“ The six-week summer concert program features numerous area favorite performers. Illinois Valley Little League operates a refreshment stand during concerts. See the ad in this issue.
REUNIONMANIA - IVHS Alumni & Friends will hold its annual Reunionmania Weekend on Friday through Sunday, July 2 through 4. Eight Illinois Valley High School classes from 1950 to 2000 will be in Illinois Valley with dinners, parties and other celebrations. Alumni-sponsored events include a tour of Kerbyville Museum at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 3, a dance Saturday evening at the Junction Inn, and a breakfast and silent auction (public can attend) from 8 a.m. to noon on the Fourth of July Sunday at Jubilee Park. Alumni weekend events support scholarships for IVHS seniors. See the ad on page 7.
ALUMNI ALLOCATIONS - IVHS Alumni & Friends has received 17 applications for its three $2,500 scholarships and the new community service award of $500 sponsored by SOFCU Community Credit Union. Balloting by class-designated voters and retired teachers at Kerbyville Museum began Monday, June 28 and will end at noon Saturday, July 3. There also is a polling place in Grants Pass for those who live out of the valley. The new SOFCU Community Service Scholarship will be awarded by the Screening Committee. Scholarship recipients will be announced during breakfast in Jubilee Park on Sunday, July 4.
HOSPICE BENEFIT - Tickets are available for “Heart of Summer,“ the third annual dinner and auction gala sponsored by Lovejoy Hospice. The event will be held on Saturday, July 10 at Countryside Village at 1700 Kellenbeck Ave. in Grants Pass. The evening will begin at 5:30 with a wine-and-chocolate tasting followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30. There will be live and silent auctions, and the event will be capped off with music and dancing.
