IVHS spring athletes recognized

There was an abundance of accolades on the evening of Tuesday, May 25, as Illinois Valley High School athletes were honored during the annual spring sports awards.
Several students were recognized as scholar athletes for having maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Senior Ben Kendall and sophomore Andrew McLaughlin from the baseball team received that honor.
Approximately seven members of the track and field team were recognized as scholar athletes. They were seniors Rebeckah Kaberline, Daniel Nordal, and T.J. Parker; and juniors Jesse Bethke, James Buck, Mark Delgado and Kayla Johnson.
Scholar athletes for the boys golf team were Nordal, juniors Roger Hults, Bethke and Matt Coultas and sophomore Tyler Robbins.
Three Lady Cougar softball players received scholar athlete awards. They were senior Kayla Young, junior Taylor DeGuilio and sophomore Thea Barker-Cortrecht.
McLaughlin was named most valuable player for the baseball squad. Freshman Kevin Smith earned a nod for most improved baseball player.
Kaberline was named most valuable female for track, and Johnson received that honor for field events. Junior Mark Delgado won most valuable male for track, with Bethke named most valuable male for field.
Freshman Matthew Brock was named the track and field team“s up-and-coming athlete. Barker-Cortrecht was named up-and-coming athlete for the junior varsity track and field team.
Two track members received SISU honors. That term is commonly used to describe strength of will and perseverance in the face of adversity. Recipients were freshman Taysha Hodge and sophomore Brian Terry.
Junior Cindy Moore was named most valuable player for the softball team. Freshman Rachel Mason was named most improved, junior Sierra Heikka was named most inspirational and DeGuilio received an award for outstanding leadership.
Hults was named most valuable player for the golf team. Bethke was listed as most improved.
Among girl golfers, junior Chelsea Bullock was honored as most valuable player, and junior Laurissa Tausaga was named most improved.
