New thrift store offers “life line“; benefits area food bank
From our weekly issue dated May 26, 2010
Another lifeline is offered to aid those caught in the turbulence of the current economy.
Joy Hoskins and one of her daughters, Melanie Hoskins, have opened the Life Lines Thrift Store to help generate revenue for the food bank to aid Illinois Valley residents who need a hand.
Formerly Earth Friendly Kids at 319-B S. Redwood Hwy. in Downtown Cave Junction, the new thrift store opened May 1. Joy stated that “community response has been tremendous.“
Joy — author of To Know That You Know, Little Life Lines, and Promises, Promises — founded Gospel Life Lines, a pen-pal prison ministry, in October 1994.
“A lifeline is a rope or line for saving lives,“ she said. “Life Lines is an organization that sends out a lifeline (God“s Word) not only to lost souls behind bars, but to anyone, anywhere, anytime. The Life Lines Family sends love and encouragement to help strengthen people in their daily walk.“
The ministry expanded and opened the Life Lines Food Bank 2 1/2 years ago.
“The Food Bank is not people“s food source, but it is a boost and a blessing for families, seniors and single moms,“ said Joy. “We fed 1,367 people last month.“
Life Lines Food Bank at 481 S. Junction Ave., distributes food Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon.
Those wishing to donate food items, canned goods and produce can bring items during hours of operation, or phone 541-592-3643.
Life Lines Thrift Store will participate in the Summer Food Program, providing free breakfasts and lunches Mondays through Fridays for all children ages 1 to 18. The Summer Food Program is sponsored by Oregon Dept. of Education and administered by Three Rivers School District Food & Nutritional Service Office.
Joy applauds stores such as Shop Smart Food Warehouse and Southern Oregon Outreach Foundation, which participate in the program, helping families obtain produce and dairy items.
Evie Hare is store manager, while Irish Smith and Roxie Chestney are in charge of processing all the donations already flooding into the new store.
Among the many items available: clothing, shoes, stuffed animals, baby toys, games, puzzles, toaster ovens, electric curlers, books, movies, wooden chess board, vacuum cleaner bags, cassettes, CDs, contact paper, remote controls, picture frames, shoe shine kit, typewriter, lamps, suitcase, and end tables.
Phone Melanie at 541-287-0191 to pick up good usable items left over from yard sales, or bring them to Life Lines Thrift Store between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
Email LifeLines@cavenet.com or visit www.GospelLifeLines.org. Although the thrift store does not yet have a phone, a contact number for Life Lines Prison Ministry is 541-592-3643, or P.O. Box 1816, Cave Junction OR 97523.
