Open government topic of DOJ Medford meeting

From our weekly issue dated May 26, 2010

Oregon Attorney General John Kroger has launched a systematic review of Oregon“s transparency laws to identify weak points and suggest improvements in time for the 2011 legislative session.

A successful overhaul of Oregon“s open government laws will require input from the public, the media and government officials, according to Kroger.

To that end, he is sponsoring a series of public meetings around the state, co-sponsored by the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association. “Their purpose is to gather suggestions from everyone interested in improving government transparency,“ Kroger said.

In S.W. Oregon, a meeting is planned for Thursday, June 10 at the Medford Library, 205 S. Central Ave., beginning at 6 p.m.

Additionally, the attorney general“s office has made available online resources for citizens to learn more about public meeting and public records law. Now accessible at no charge is the Public Records and Public Meetings Manual, a guide for state agencies and local governments. Also available is the Citizen“s Guide to Public Records and Meetings, which provides answers to frequently asked questions about open government laws.
