BELIEVERS BAKIN“ - The Believers Relay for Life team from SOFCU Community Credit Union has featured several fund-raisers at the Cave Junction Branch during May. There will be a bake sale on Friday, May 28 during regular lobby hours. The goal is to raise at least $3,000 to donate to The American Cancer Society annual Relay for Life set for June 19 and 20 at North Valley High School.

MEMORIAL MOMENTS - On Monday, May 31, Glenn Morrison American Legion Post 70 & Auxiliary will hold two Memorial Day ceremonies. The first will begin at 8 a.m. at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction. The second commemoration will begin at 10 a.m. in front of Cave Junction City Hall.

GRADUATION EBULLIENCE - Commencement for Illinois Valley High School“s Class of 2010 will be held on Tuesday, June 1 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Weather permitting, it will be held at the athletic field. Otherwise, the usual alternate location is Ken Mann Memorial Gym.

A GOOD READ - “Make a splash. READ!“ is the theme this summer at the Illinois Valley Branch of Josephine County Libraries Inc. at 209 W. Palmer St. in Cave Junction, just down the street from Carlos“ Restaurante. Children can explore the world of water and water fun through stories, songs, games and other activities about oceans, rivers, lakes and pools and their denizens. The free summer reading program is open to pre-schoolers through young adults. It will feature prize drawings, story hours, a reading club and more. Registration will begin June 16. VALE OF TREATS - Illinois Valley branch of Rogue Valley Boys & Girls Club will present the premier Taste of Illinois Valley happening on Saturday, June 26 at Bridgeview Vineyards Winery on Holland Loop. Specialties from at least 10 area establishments, as well as from valley wineries, will be featured. NOTEPAD - Rising prices have spurred a rash of gasoline and diesel fuel thefts from vehicles in the Cave Junction area, said Deputy George Gasperson, CJ contract officer from Josephine County Sheriff“s Office. “If you have the means of securing gas caps, that would help prevent thefts,“ Gasperson told the city council on Monday, May 10. Otherwise, the officer noted, April was a slow month for criminal activity ... Illinois Valley Booster Club will hold a Community Field Day at the IVHS athletic field on Saturday, June 5 beginning at 12:30 p.m. Teams will participate in contests including a wheelbarrow race and water balloon toss. Sign up a team of five to 10 at IVHS beforehand or at the event ... The National Smokejumper Association will celebrate 70 years since the advent of smokejumping in 1940 by hosting a reunion June 11 to 13 in Redding, Calif.
