Quartet harmony to grace Chateau
From our weekly issue dated May 19, 2010
Special treats are in store this weekend for guests of the Chateau at Oregon Caves National Monument, 20 miles east of Cave Junction.
The barbershop quartet, “Lytning,“ will perform Saturday, May 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. This group won the 2010 state championship in the senior category in March, and will perform at several area locations during the next few weeks.
“Lytning“ is the only internationally registered quartet in the Grants Pass area. The quartet started nine years ago. After some member changes, it consists today of tenor Herb Ottesen, 90; lead Allen Crocker, the “baby“ of the quartet at 62; bass Mark Larsen, 64; and baritone Bob Meisner, 75.
Crocker lives in Selma; his fellow harmonizers reside in Grants Pass.
All area groups are members of the Rogue Valley Harmonizers Chorus, based in Medford. The chorus performs three shows a year.
The members of “Lytning“ and others also engage in community service by volunteering for “Get Americans Singing Again“ (GASA). This program teaches fourth-graders 10 songs selected from a book of 40, which is donated by the chorus to all the grade schools in Three Rivers School District.
A mass sing-along takes place in Grants Pass with students and friends in the audience, and the R.V. Harmonizers on stage. Usually between 450 and 500 youth participate, and during the years 4,000 to 5,000 fourth-graders have been involved.
The Illinois Valley Community Development Organization operates the Chateau as Oregon Caves Outfitters, authorized concessionaire of the National Park Service.
Chateau patrons are encouraged to make reservations by phoning 541-592-3400 for the evening performance.
