With the Skyline Conference District Meet on the horizon, the Illinois Valley High School co-ed track team is riding a wave of positive momentum.

The team spent Wednesday, May 5 at the North Valley meet in Merlin. The event featured a strong showing by the Cougar boys 4x400 relay team, which won its race with a time of 3:46.

Members of that squad are senior T.J. Parker, juniors Celilo Nordal and Jordan Crouse, and sophomore Troy Mikels.

On Saturday, May 8, the I.V. was at the Grants Pass Rotary Invitational.

Junior Kayla Johnson recorded a Cougar record by throwing her discus 115-11. Coach Todd Kaberline said that beat the former school record by nearly a foot.

Kaberline added that Johnson has been throwing the discus approximately 120 feet in practice, and hopes to reach 130 feet in time for the district meet. It is scheduled for Friday, May 21 at the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls.

But before that, the team is set to compete Friday, May 14 at the Skyline Conference JV District Meet at Eagle Point High School.

The team originally was to be at the Wally Ciochetti Invitational in Cottage Grove that day. But Kaberline said that the team voted to support the JV runners instead.
