It was a busy weekend for the Illinois Valley High School co-ed track team, which competed in Eugene and Rogue River.

The Oregon Relays sprinted off on Friday, April 30 at Hayward Field in Eugene, and featured a cross-section of top high school, college and professional athletes.

Senior “Beckah“ Kaberline set personal-best records in the long jump and 100- and 200-meter races. Also faring well at the Oregon Relays was junior Jordan Crouse, who had a split time of 55 seconds in the 4x400 relay.

“We had the opportunity to see some of the nation“s best athletes compete, which I know inspired our athletes,“ said coach Todd Kaberline.

The Cougar track team also was inspired by many athletes from Lane Community College sporting T-shirts in support of Larry Ragsdale, a 2008 IVHS graduate and star athlete.

Ragsdale was involved in a car accident near Corvallis earlier this year that put him in a coma.

“Our prayers and support go out to Larry and his family,“ said the coach.

The Chieftain Invitational was held Saturday, May 1 at Rogue River. Cougar athletes racked up 10 personal-best marks.

Junior Jesse Bethke set a personal best in the discus and javelin competitions, and leaped to second place in the high jump.

Freshman Nick Hoezle, referred to by the coach as a “rising track star,“ set two personal records. Hoezle ran the 800-meter race in 2:32, and finished the 1,500-meter run in 5:06.

Up next for the team is the Grants Pass Rotary Invitational Saturday, May 8.

“After that, we start our focus on the district meet and the state finals,“ coach Kaberline said.
