POPCORN PROCEEDS - The Believers Relay for Life team from SOFCU Community Credit Union will feature several fund-raisers at the Cave Junction Branch during May. The goal is to raise at least $3,000 to donate to The American Cancer Society annual Relay for Life set for June 19 and 20 at North Valley High School. Popcorn Days will be Fridays, May 7 and 14. SOFCU will offer delicious, tantalizing popcorn from Blind George“s Newsstand in Grants Pass for a $1-per-bag donation.

CAVES FREE - Saturday, May 8, is designated Community Day at Oregon Caves National Monument. Admission to the cave tour will be free from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. based on staff and visitors. At the same time, a food drive will be conducted. Attendees are asked to bring donations of canned and nonperishable food items for donation to the Rotary First Harvest campaign.

RABIES CLINICS - Special clinics will be held Saturday, May 8 to provide vaccinations for small animals at reduced cost with no office fee. Dogs, cats and ferrets can receive shots at Crossroads Animal Hospital, 421 Caves Hwy., from 10 a.m. to noon. No appointment is necessary. Dr. Zachary Robinson“s Mobile Veterinary Clinic will be at Illinois Valley Grange Hall, 3673 Holland Loop, from noon to 5 p.m. for small animals, with no appointment necessary. “HAIR-MONIUS“ EVENT - A fund-raising day is set at Back Street Salon in Western Plaza at the north end of Cave Junction on Wednesday, May 12. A portion of the day“s proceeds from haircuts, waxing, nails and foot detox services will benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. ART ON! - Illinois River Valley Arts Council“s Second Friday ArtWalk series will kick off the 2010 season in Downtown Cave Junction on May 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. See preview on page 13.

“FUN“D RAISER - Saturday, May 15 is set for a fund-raiser for the Class of 2010 Safe & Sober Grad Night Party at Illinois Valley High School. The fund-raiser will feature “succulent barbecued pork or vegetarian gourmet dish,“ plus salad, fresh breads, McGrew“s famous au gratin potatoes, veg kabobs, and wine or sparkling juice. And there will be “a special decadent dessert table.“ The meal will be served on the Bridgeview Vineyards Winery deck overlooking the pond. Music will be by Jefferson. The 4 to 7 p.m. event will include a fashion show, and silent and live auctions. All proceeds will help pay for the grad party on June 1. Bridgeview is located at 4210 Holland Loop. NOTEPAD - “Everybody Loves Larry“ wrist bands at $2 each are available at Illinois Valley High School in support of Larry Ragsdale, a 2008 IVHS graduate seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident near Corvallis in March. He remains in a semicoma in a hospital. All proceeds will support Larry in his recovery. (Also see the related letter in this issue) ... Free clean clothes will be given away Saturday, May 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Takilma Bible Church, 10343 Takilma Road ... Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce will hold a mixer on Friday, May 21 for members and others in business at the Chateau at Oregon Caves National Monument. Community volunteers and members of the Sourdough Chapter of Back Country Horsemen are near to completing a log-and-plank bridge along a new hiking/equestrian trail at Illinois River Forks State Park. The trailhead, near mile marker 3 on Westside Road, features parking and a restroom, plus there are 6.2 miles of single-track natural surface trails varying from easy to moderate steepness winding through a low-altitude forest with wildflowers ... Labor Day Parade and festival vendor sign-ups for the annual Illinois Valley Lions Club events are available.
