Despite recent bad weather and the illness of some of its members, the Illinois Valley High School track team is continuing a positive spring sports season.

The team has been accepted to compete in the Oregon Relays on Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1 at Hayward Field in Eugene, said coach Todd Kaberline. The event will feature the best high school athletes in the Northwest, including those from California, Washington, Idaho and Nevada.

Kaberline said that he plans to send the Cougar boys 4X4 and 4X400 relay teams. Junior Kayla Johnson will represent IVHS in the 100-meter shot, discus and javelin events; senior Casey Robertson will compete in the 3,000-meter run; and senior Beckah Kaberline will participate in the long jump, triple jump and 100- and 200-meter runs.

Johnson still is ranked second in the state in discus. She qualified for the state meet by beating the 114-foot mark. She is 6 inches away from the IVHS record of 115 feet, the coach said.

He added that Johnson“s goal this year is to throw 129 feet, and that she is “well on her way“ to achieving that feat. He also expects Johnson to be a strong contender in javelin at the district meet next month.

On Wednesday, April 7, the team participated in a league meet at Hidden Valley High School in Murphy. Todd Kaberline said that many Cougars were unable to compete due to illness.

He described the Saturday, April 10 Brookings Rotary Invitational as “very cold and windy, which seemed to hold back any real good performances.“

But that isn“t stopping him from talking up his squad“s individual achievements.

Sophomore Brian Terry has cleared the 9-6 mark in pole vaulting, and “should be a contender.“

“He has consistently improved his mark by 6 inches every meet,“ the coach said.

Junior Glen Moore has set a personal record in all three throwing events, the coach said, and has increased his javelin mark to 131-9.

The Cougar track team is scheduled to compete in the Crater Rotary Classic in Central Point Saturday, April 17.
