SMART! FUND-RAISING - Wild River Brewing & Pizza Co. at 249 Redwood Hwy. in Cave Junction, will donate a portion of their proceeds on Wednesday, April 21 to the SMART! (Start Making A Reader Today!) program at Evergreen Elementary School. SMART sends more than 1,000 books home with I.V. students each year. FREEDOM FORUM - “Educating sheriffs and people on rights and freedom,“ former Arizona Sheriff Richard Mack will speak at North Valley High School on Sunday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is hosted by Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson. In 1994 Mack filed a lawsuit challenging the Brady Bill, winning a U.S. Supreme Court decision on the issue of states“ rights. Subsequent notoriety catapulted Mack to national attention, with multiple television appearances. He lectures and gives seminars on constitutional issues relating to gun control, law enforcement, states“ rights, the drug war, and sheriffs“ oaths of office. There is a cost to attend. THRIFT DRIFT - Life Lines Thrift Store is scheduled to open Saturday, May 1 in Downtown Cave Junction. The store will be in the former location of Earth Friendly Kids, across the parking lot from Bi-Rite Auto Parts and across from Shop Smart. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except Sundays. Run by volunteers, proceeds will be used by the Life Lines ministry for its food bank that aids the needy.
NOTEPAD - John E. Granville, a longtime valley resident and wounded Vietnam veteran, will have his name inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. during a Memorial Day event on May 31. Granville, who died in 2007, is among five veterans whose names will be added to the installation. Several family members plan to attend the event ... Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson has announced that staffing is now in place to offer 24-hour telephone coverage for non-emergency calls. Said Gilbertson, “If you have an urgent matter and you would like a deputy to respond outside records hours of operation, please call 541-474-5123 and press option for dispatcher.“ ...
