Selma Skill Share workshops & classes set April 17

Workshops, classes and useful information will be part of the third annual Selma Skillshare on Saturday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Selma Center, 18255 Redwood Hwy. in Selma.

This free, public event, co-sponsored by Spiral Living Center and the Selma Center, consists of many classes, workshops, hands-on activities and presentations on useful topics such as raising goats for fiber and meat, bicycle and tool repair, emergency preparedness, and more.

Teachers from throughout Illinois Valley will lend their talents to the event.

Skill-building courses for children, will include making a worm compost bin, making and planting a wooden planter box, learning to repair one“s bicycle, and weaving doormats with recycled twine, thanks to assistance from the Carpenter Foundation. At noon there will be a children“s performance of songs from their CD album, “Helping the World to Grow: Songs About Gardening“ written and performed by Ari Dwyer, Hazel Randall, and Jazmyn Danko, with accompaniment by Scott & Coreen Hampson.

Attendees are encouraged to bring broken tools to donate to the tool library (they will be repaired and sharpened). Also, garden seeds and envelopes for seed exchange, bicycles to repair, recycled twine from hay bales to make into doormats, and something to contribute to a potluck lunch.

Other classes will include making new clothes from old, making fermented food and sourdough bread, learning trigger points, a massage technique, and alpaca husbandry. There will be talks on natural healing for seasonal allergies, “seeing through Nature“s eyes,“ seedsaving, emergency preparedness, and a demonstration of a Biochar stove.

Samples of local edible, medicinal and native plants can be viewed and identified.

Spiral Living Center has been serving Illinois Valley since 2006. Its mission of promoting sustainable living skills in the valley is supported by a diverse group of community members.
