Spring showers and snowstorms caused cancellation of many high school sporting events last week.
But the Illinois Valley High School boys varsity baseball team still managed to squeeze in a single game against North Medford on Thursday, April 1.
A Tuesday, March 30 game at Grants Pass High School was canceled due to weather, and a Saturday, April 3 game at South Umpqua High School was rescheduled for Friday, April 9.
North Medford sent its junior varsity team to Cave Junction for the April 1 game.
The Cougar squad started off hot, scoring 9 runs in the first four innings. A 9-4 lead was held until the top of the seventh inning, at which point North Medford mounted an offensive comeback, scoring 6 runs for a 10-9 win.
Junior Bryan Biggs was the starting pitcher for the Cougars, and was relieved by junior Curtis Paulson in the seventh. Biggs gave up four runs from the mound.
Several Cougars racked up multiple hits in the close loss. Junior Zach Anderson went 2-4, junior Andrew McLaughlin went 3-5, senior Tobin Mikels went 2-3, senior Brandon Foraker went 3-4 and junior Anthony Becker went 2-5.
Coach Bob Johnson praised his team“s efforts against North Medford.
“We played well against a pretty good team,“ he said.
On Tuesday, April 13, the squad is scheduled to travel to North Valley High School in Merlin to take on the Knights, weather permitting.
“I“m pretty sure we“ll be able to compete all right against them,“ Johnson said. “They certainly shouldn“t overmatch us.“
