Students at Illinois Valley High School brought home nine awards from a welding competition at Rogue Community College in Grants Pass on Friday, March 12.
IVHS was one of five area schools to participate in the annual competition. Welding students from Hidden Valley, Glendale, Rogue River and Klamath Union high schools also participated.
Teacher Amy Meyer said that IVHS students placed in all but one of the eight categories.
“I“m really proud of the kids,“ she said. “They did an amazing job.“
Senior Clinten Robinson won three awards, including first place for advanced Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding, and first place for Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding. He also took third place in oxyacetelyne cutting.
Mike Luevano, also a senior, placed first in oxyacetelyne welding and second in torch cutting. Senior Kayla Young, a first-year welder, took first place in beginning MIG and third in beginning oxyacetelyne welding.
Junior Tyler Delaney placed second in beginning arc welding, and senior Brandon Froderman took third in advanced oxyacetalyne welding.
Meyer said that the IVHS welding program is a self-paced class. Students are required to turn in five welds throughout 12 weeks, based on quality instead of quantity. Their projects are not submitted until they are “A“ or “B“ grade quality, she said.
“It“s an amazing program for the kids,“ Meyer said, adding that students also help teach each other.
