During a pair of recent meets, the Illinois Valley High School co-ed track team simultaneously saw setbacks and success.

On Monday, March 15, the team was among 10 to participate in the Crusader Relays at St. Mary“s School in Medford. The Cougar squad placed fourth overall.

Sophomore Troy Mikels ran the mile for the first time, and took fourth place.

“He“s going to be a great one for us,“ said coach Todd Kaberline.

For the first time in more than a decade, IVHS is participating in the pole-vaulting category. In his first career pole vault, junior James Buck reached 8-6.

The team headed to the Oakridge Relay on Saturday, March 20, where it was one of 12 teams. The Cougar boys relay team came in third with a time of 46.7 seconds.

Junior Kayla Johnson threw the discus 112 feet, making her second-best in the state.

Senior Beckah Kaberline won the long-jump competition with a leap of 15-2, which makes her fifth best in the state. As well, as the first girls pole vaulter in IVHS history, she set a school record at 7 feet.

“I suspect she“ll go to about 10 or 10 feet, 6 inches this year,“ said the coach.

On Wednesday, April 7, the team will go to Hidden Valley High School in Murphy for its next event.

Coach Kaberline said that he anticipates the team doing well this year.

“We“re going to have a really good team this year,“ he said. “We“re a small team of less than 30 kids, but I“m guessing that by the end of the year, 10 kids will go to state, and we will set at least five school records.“
