Fast-pitch squad 1-2 at Grants Pass Jamboree

From our weekly issue dated March 24, 2010

The Cougars fast-pitch softball team took to the Grants Pass High School field Thursday, March 18 to scrimmage against three teams in a preseason jamboree.

The Illinois Valley High School Cougs came away with losses to Grants Pass (8-0) and Glendale (8-2), but finished with a win against South Medford (2-1). Head coach Kenny Hix was enthusiastic about the team“s improvement during the course of the day.

“The girls were a little nervous,“ Hix said. “We got better, and we really connected with the ball.“

He underscored that Kayla Johnson“s athletic efforts in the third game secured the winning run. Johnson, with a base hit to first, then proceeded to steal second, third and home — beating the throw from South Medford“s pitcher by diving headfirst under the tag.

“We put the bat on the ball and really progressed,“ Hix said. “I“m proud of these girls.“
