Seligman among commissioner hopefuls
From our weekly issue dated March 10, 2010
Selma resident Mark Seligman brought his candidacy for Josephine County commissioner to the Thursday, March 4 meeting of Americans for Prosperity at a restaurant in Grants Pass.
Nearly 30 people were present, including Sheriff Gil Gilbertson and commissioner candidates Jack Brown and Simon Hare.
Seligman, 60, was born in New York City and moved to Josephine County in 1995 from Sonoma County, Calif. He describes himself as a lifelong Democrat who has become more “Libertarian“ during the years and now is registered as an Independent.
The addition of more laws and the need to enforce them result in less liberty, Seligman said. He said that it is an “affront“ when citizens vote for something and their leaders ignore it.
If elected, Seligman said, he would work well with Commissioner Sandi Cassanelli.
“We think alike on a lot of issues,“ Seligman said.
He also pledged to donate 10 percent of his salary as commissioner to youth programs, and said he would urge other county officials to do the same. As commissioner, Seligman said he would have a table once weekly outside the courthouse so people could speak directly to him.
Asked about his spending priorities, Seligman said that he would “look at what the voters want.“
“I“m a servant of the people, not the other way around,“ he said.
Seligman acknowledged that he supported incumbent Dave Toler during the commissioner“s 2006 campaign.
“I thought he“d think creatively,“ Seligman said.
With regard to natural resources, Seligman said he prefers striking a balance between utilization and the environment.
Seligman said that he, Brown or Hare would be an improvement over the current crop of commissioners. He added that he supports funding for the sheriff“s office, but not through an increase in the county property tax rate.
The election will be held on Tuesday, May 18.
