Rep. Ron Maurer (R-Grants Pass) delivered the Founder“s Speech during the 46th annual Dorchester Conference in Seaside on Oregon“s northern coast.

The Dorchester Conference is a yearly gathering of Republican activists from throughout the state. It was started by Bob Packwood, who went on to become a U.S. senator.

Maurer gave his speech on the evening of Saturday, March 6 in the Seaside Convention Center. He began by discussing his political career, which began in 2006, when he was the only new Republican elected to the Oregon House of Representatives.

The 2008 election resulted in Oregon Republicans being in the super-minority in the House and Senate.

“Where we sit now, we have almost no ability to drive the process and govern,“ Maurer said. However, he predicted that this November will be a good year for Republican candidates.

“People are more engaged and motivated than I have ever seen,“ Maurer said.

This year, we have some statewide offices in Oregon that are well within reach, and a new class of legislative candidates that are the best we“ve had in decades, if not ever.“

Maurer drew a parallel between the present and 1994, when Republicans gained control of the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years. He also challenged audience members to become involved in election efforts.

If we all do this, we can make great progress together“, Maurer said.

Last month, Maurer announced his intention to run for superintendent of public instruction, a post now held by Susan Castillo. He explained his reasons.

“I was not going to sit by and watch this seat go unchallenged,“ Maurer said. “I am going to be your next superintendent of public instruction. I have a clear message. I am more qualified, and have a well-vetted roadmap to fix the education system in Oregon.“

The Dorchester Conference also featured a debate Friday evening, March 5 among the three Republicans seeking the party“s nomination for governor. Participating were former Portland Trailblazers basketball star Chris Dudley, Allen Alley, and former legislator John Lim. The debate was moderated by U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Hood River).
