County commissioner field fills with final filings
From our weekly issue dated March 10, 2010
At least one more candidate has filed for the Tuesday, May 18 election to run for the Josephine County commissioner position held by Illinois Valley resident Dave Toler.
Rycke Brown, a Grants Pass resident, officially filed a series of petitions with the county clerk“s office on Wednesday, March 3. The signatures have been verified, said Art Harvey, county clerk and recorder.
Brown is a natural gardener who has owned her own business for nearly 10 years. She has become a familiar figure in county politics, and regularly attends county commission and Grants Pass City Council meetings. Brown also has held weekly protests in Downtown Grants Pass, where she speaks in opposition to the federal government“s War on Drugs.
In 2005, Brown was arrested for giving away marijuana cookies at one of her protests, and subsequently was found guilty of drug possession. She also spent two years in an Arizona jail for growing, possessing and selling more than 4 pounds of marijuana.
Earlier this year, Brown was found guilty of four counts of criminal trespass stemming from a series of incidents at the Grants Pass Grower“s Market in 2009.
Brown said that she won“t campaign as aggressively as some other candidates.
“I will be accepting no contributions,“ she said. “I will be running no ads on the radio or have any signs on the street. I“m doing a button campaign.“
Brown said that her reasons for running are simple.
“I think I can do a better job than the commissioners or any of the other candidates who have filed so far or are likely to file,“ Brown said. “And it“s a very good salary.“
Allen Ehr, who ran for commissioner in 2008, said that he also is leaning toward filing for this race. Paul Walter, Newswithviews.com editor and frequent commissioner candidate, said that he still was undecided as of Friday, March 5.
