Toastmasters seeks Cave Junction chapter
From our weekly issue dated March 03, 2010
Grants Pass resident Larry West admits that he hasn“t always been the best public speaker.
Luckily, he was able to join Toastmasters International to improve his projection, and now wants to spread that opportunity to Illinois Valley residents.
West has been involved in the club for nearly five years, and serves as area governor for the region between Roseburg and Medford.
The Toastmasters organization has been around since 1925, and helps its members hone their oratory skills.
“It really appeals to the broadest spectrum of people who possibly think they want to do self-improvement in two areas — communications capability, which includes public speaking, and the second area is leadership,“ West said.
He added that often, new members have a difficult time looking at an audience. But improvement is visible after just a few weeks, he stated.
“Within a month or two months, they have direct eye contact and body language,“ West said. “It“s simply speaking with a sense of confidence.“
Around 20 members are needed to establish a new Toastmasters chapter, West said. A room at the RCC Kerby Belt Building is available to host meetings for a Cave Junction club, and West said that he would be willing to volunteer to be a founding member and club coach.
“We often have people in the Illinois Valley driving all the way to Grants Pass just to get to Toastmasters,“ West said. “We have some very good talent in this area.“
