River Street signal garners county board support
From our weekly issue dated March 03, 2010
A letter of support for installation of traffic signals at River Street and Hwy. 199 in the city of Cave Junction was approved 2-0 Tuesday, Feb. 23 by the Josephine County Board of Commissioners during an administrative meeting at the courthouse in Grants Pass.
Commissioner Dave Toler said that such an improvement is long overdue.
“We“ve been wanting a light there for a long time,“ stated the Illinois Valley resident. The ODOT project has surpassed its original budget, Toler said, and additional funds are being sought.
He added that the letter of support to members of Oregon“s Congressional delegation is needed to help push for the money.
Traffic signals at the 199 and River intersection would be useful, Toler said, because Evergreen Elementary School is right down W. River. He said that the street also often is used by Lorna Byrne Middle School students.
Additionally, besides area home owners, the intersection often is used by persons including those driving in connection with Illinois Valley High School, I.V. Senior Center, I.V. Family Resource Center, Early Head Start, Head Start, Jefferson State Financial Services, and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Board Chairman Dwight Ellis said that he also supports sending the letter.
Toler moved to approve it, and Ellis seconded. Board Vice Chairman Sandi Cassanelli was absent due to a scheduling conflict.
Currently on 3/10th of a mile of 199 in Cave Junction there are three sets of traffic signals at Caves Hwy., Watkins Street and Lister Street.
