Six Illinois Valley High School wrestlers traveled to the state tournament in Portland Thursday, Feb. 25, and four ended up placing.

Overall, the Cougars earned 12th place out of the 42 teams that participated in the tournament. Coach Jay Miller said that he would liked to have seen the team do better.

“Our goal was to make the top 10,“ he said. “We didn“t make it.“

Freshman Gabe Miller set the standard for the Cougars grapplers, and earned third place in the 119-pound weight division. Sophomore Jesse Orndoff took fourth among 112-pounders, senior Brandon Foraker took sixth in the 189-pound class, and junior Matt Coultas placed seventh among 145-pounders.

Miller said that he is optimistic about the squad“s prospects for next year, and anticipates that many of the team“s juniors, sophomores and freshmen will return.

“We have a fairly good group of eighth-graders coming in,“ Miller said. “We will be counting heavily on them.“
