From our weekly issue dated March 03, 2010
A pair of losses ended the season for the Illinois Valley High School girls varsity basketball team.
On Tuesday, Feb. 23, the Lady Cougars hosted the Phoenix High School Pirates at Ken Mann Memorial Gymnasium in Cave Junction. That game resulted in a 78-30 loss for Illinois Valley.
Junior Kayla Johnson and sophomore Thea Barker-Cortrecht led the Lady Cougars in scoring, with 8 points apiece. Barker-Cortrecht was filling in for junior Laurissa Taugasa, out due to illness.
The Cougars traveled to North Valley High School in Merlin on Wednesday, Feb. 24 to take on the Knights in the first round of the play-offs.
Despite a strong showing by Johnson, Illinois Valley lost 65-20.
Johnson scored 12 points in that contest, with senior Beckha Kaberline putting up 6 points.
Illinois Valley ended the season at 1-23, with an 0-12 mark in the Skyline Conference.
The Cougars will drop from 4-A to the 3-A conference level next year. Coach Steve Marsden said that should make the team much more competitive.
“I think they will build on this year a lot,“ Marsden said. “I think they“ll surprise a lot of people next year.“
