The annual Winter Gala, sponsored by the Illinois River Valley Arts Council (IRVAC), will be held Sunday, Feb. 28 from 1 to 5 p.m.
Two ensembles, Quintessentials and Oregon Little Big Band duo Tim Wallace and Michelle LeComte, will play jazz and popular standards in separate sets.
Winter Gala will take place at the Deer Creek Center: 1241 Illinois River Road in Selma; 1.2 miles west of Redwood Hwy. (Hwy. 199). Tickets can be purchased at the door. Advance tickets at a reduced rate can be purchased from IRVAC board members, or at Cabin Chemistry at the corner of Redwood and Caves highways in Cave Junction.
Wallace and LeComte perform several times a month in Grants Pass and in the San Francisco area several times a year. Quintessentials is a popular woodwind quintet based in Grants Pass featuring Shirley Barklind on flute, Kim Kostnra on clarinet, Fred Holman on French horn, Dick Stryker on bassoon, and Joe Chankin on oboe and flute.
Their most recent Illinois Valley appearance was during IRVAC“s “Live at Deer Creek“ outdoor concert in June 2009.
Rounding out the afternoon“s entertainment will be two singers: Jim Rich, the well-known artistic director of Jefferson Baroque Orchestra, will offer traditional songs ranging from sea shanties to Baroque ballads. Valley newcomer Tamera Whiteaker will sing popular and patriotic songs.
Drawings, silent and live auctions of art, functional items and entertainment packages are also planned, including a night“s lodging and dinner for two at the Chateau at Oregon Caves, and Seven Feathers Casino & Resort.
Other offerings include a 3-by-6-foot Persian tribal rug, a guided hike with lunch prepared by chef Greg Walter, and tickets to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Locally produced items include pottery by Andrea Brinkman, Gwen Childs and Dr. James Nordal, a wall hanging by Carol Dickson, crib quilts by Kathy Lombardo and Tamera Whiteaker, and creations in wood by Dale Brain, Jesse Goldtrap, Kauffman
Wood Products, and Sonny Ness. Gift certificates for personal care services by Rachel Goodman, Terri Hill, Cherie Miller, and Debbie Wilson will be available as well as garden supplies from Chapman Nursery and Good Earth Organics.
The event is a fund-raiser for IRVAC“s Learning Through Art (LTA) and Arts in the Valley. LTA is a curriculum-enhancement program sponsored by IRVAC at Evergreen Elementary and Lorna Bryne Middle schools, and Josephine Community Library in Cave Junction. Arts in the Valley includes Cave Junction“s Second Friday ArtWalk in May, August and November as well as concerts: “Live at Deer Creek“ and “Holiday Live.“
A special menu of authentic Greek appetizers and desserts will be featured this year including dolmadas, spanikopita, and pastitsos. These popular Mediterranean dishes will be prepared from old family recipes. There will be a cash bar featuring Bridgeview and Foris wines.
