USFS natural resource project proposals sought

From our weekly issue dated February 17, 2010

Proposals for natural resource projects under the Secure Rural Schools and Community self-Determination Act of 2000 are called for by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS).

Projects proposals are due April 2.

Funding is limited to Josephine, Jackson, Coos, Curry, Douglas, Lane, and Klamath counties. Projects must be located in, or benefit, the Rogue River-Siskiyou or Umpqua National forests. Funding would be available no earlier than Feb. 15, 2011.

Projects should be submitted online at https://www.notes.fs.fed.us/wo/secure_rural_schools.nsf; then connect to either the Rogue & Umpqua RAC or Siskiyou RAC. This round of funding is the third year through the Secure Rural Schools Act, reauthorized in 2008.

A workshop about submitting proposals successfully is set for Monday, Feb. 22, at 5:30 p.m. at the Umpqua National Forest office, 2900 N.W. Stewart Parkway in Roseburg. People interested in submitting a proposal will see first-hand how to use the online database. They also will see the steps in receiving this type of federal funding.

The Secure Rural Schools legislation encourages nonprofit organizations, state and county governments, and academia and private enterprises to propose projects that benefit national forest system land. The types of proposals eligible for funding include:

  • Restoring or maintaining watersheds
  • Maintaining or decommissioning roads and trails
  • Improving soil productivity
  • Restoring fish or wildlife habitat
  • Re-establishing native species
  • Removing noxious weeds
  • Reducing hazardous fuels
Two USFS citizens advisory committees will review the projects before recommending which projects to fund. The Rogue-Umpqua RAC will meet on July 13 and 14 in Roseburg. The meeting date and location for the Siskiyou RAC is not yet scheduled.

For more information about proposals to the Siskiyou RAC, contact Paul Galloway at 541-618-2113 or via pgalloway@fs.fed.us. For more information about the Rogue-Umpqua RAC, contact Cheryl Caplan at ccaplan@fs.fed.us or at 541-957-3270.
