Injury, illness hamper Lady Cougars

From our weekly issue dated February 17, 2010

Multiple illnesses and an unexpected injury hampered the Illinois Valley High School girls varsity basketball team during a Friday, Feb. 12 loss at Henley.

The Cougar point guard, senior “Becka“ Kaberline, was sidelined for the game due to sickness. The team“s leading scorer, junior Laurissa Tausaga, also was ill, but still played.

“She was definitely under the weather,“ stated coach Steve Marsden.

During the 75-15 loss, Junior Kara Tyler sustained a knee injury. She is out for the rest of the season. Junior Kayla Johnson led the squad in scoring with 8 points.

Despite her condition, Tausaga scored 3 points. Sophomores Carly Jensen and Megan Householder each scored 2.

Householder jammed a finger during practice the day before the game. She played with her right hand taped.

Because of the varsity shortages, sophomore Thea Barker-Cortrecht and freshman Natalie Wellen of the JV team had to step up and play.

“We were down pretty shorthanded,“ Marsden said.

On Friday, Feb. 19, the Lady Cougars will host the North Valley Knights at Ken Mann Memorial Gym in Cave Junction.

“Hopefully, nobody else gets sick,“ Marsden said. “We can“t afford to lose anybody, really, when it comes to the varsity girls.

“Our starters play a lot of minutes, and we can“t afford to lose any of them or have them at half-speed.“
