Cougars feel Hornets“ sting at home
From our weekly issue dated February 17, 2010
The Illinois Valley High School boys varsity basketball team hosted Henley on Friday, Feb. 12 in Ken Mann Memorial Gym in Cave Junction.
Unfortunately, the squad lost 61-48. Coach Jeff Winters attributes the loss to a “slow start.“ The Cougars scored 4 points in the second quarter, and were down 32-14 at halftime.
“We had a bad first half,“ Winters said.
In the second half, the Cougars outscored the Hornets 34-29, but that still was not enough to overcome the early deficit.
Sophomore Fred Hults scored 16 points for the Cougars, and had 4 steals and 6 assists. His brother, junior Roger Hults, scored 15 points.
Junior Jesse Bethke and senior Tobin Mikels both scored 6 points, and sophomore Troy Mikels 5.
On Friday, Feb. 19, the Cougars will go to Merlin to take on North Valley. Winters said the game is significant.
“If we beat them, we“ll have a home playoff game with North Valley,“ he said. “If we lose to them, the playoff is at North Valley. It“s a big game.“
The last time the Cougars and Knights met, on Feb. 2, Illinois Valley emerged with a 73-54 blowout win at Ken Mann Memorial Gym.
As such, Winters said, his team is ready for the challenge.
“It“s looking positive,“ Winters said. “We should be able to beat them.“
