From our weekly issue dated February 17, 2010

An unidentified O“Brien man phoned 911 on Thursday, Feb. 11 to report what he believed to be an explosive device on Cobalt Road.

According to Josephine County Sheriff“s Office (JCSO) logs, the call came in at 1:48 p.m. The suspected explosive was found inside a tent that the caller was packing up.

JCSO logs provide the following information:

The man described the device as looking like a fire extinguisher canister with the top removed. A cap was placed over the device with wires coming out and wrapped about the canister.

The item was found inside a backpack, with two other canisters that did not have wire. The tent was located approximately 40 yards from any structure.

An Oregon State Police bomb squad was dispatched to remove the device.

A suspect was identified as 30-year-old Merle Southard. JCSO“s Website indicates that Southard has been lodged since Jan. 15 for a probation violation. Southard was sentenced to 46 days in jail for that offense.

JCSO also lists Southard as facing an additional charge of methamphetamine possession, and two counts of possession of a destructive device. He is being held on $20,000 bail.
