I.V. grapplers encounter ups & downs
From our weekly issue dated February 10, 2010
There were some disappointments and unexpected successes for the Illinois Valley High School varsity wrestling squad last week.
On Thursday, Feb. 4, the squad traveled to Henley High School for a dual meet vs. the Hornets. The meet resulted in a narrow 36-32 loss for Cougar grapplers.
The Cougs wrestled 11 matches and won 7, but they had to forfeit 18 points.
Pins were scored by senior Brandon Parker at 103 pounds, sophomore Jesse Orndoff at 112, freshman Gabe Miller at 125, and senior Brandon Foraker at 189.
Decisions were won by senior Chris Culver at 119 pounds, junior Zach Anderson at 135, and junior Matt Coultas at 145.
The Cougars fared much better during a Saturday, Feb. 6 tournament in Cottage Grove, where the team came in third place overall. One more point would have tied the squad for second place.
Orndoff won first place in the 112-pound category, and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Coultas took first place in his division.
Third place was won by Miller in his division. He also took home a trophy for the most pins in the shortest amount of time.
Senior John Anderson took third in the 130-pound division.
Fifth place was won by Parker, Zach Anderson and Foraker in their divisions.
Despite having to default two matches due to injury, Culver placed sixth among 119-pounders.
The Cougars will host the district tournament on Saturday, Feb. 20. Coach Jay Miller said that he anticipates his team being healed up and ready to compete.
“We“re going to try and get healthy and be in top shape at the district tournament. Everything leading up to that is really just practice,“ Miller said. “What really counts are the district and state tournaments.“
